U-Haul sucks - the camper story

During the Dick family visit (see below) one of the things we had planned was a camping tripo to Southern Utah. I was so looking forward to making smores! Even after Bradley sliced his heel we were still going to - Rick and Ryan even went and picked up a wheelchair to push Bradley around in. Then after they dropped the wheel chair back home, they went to the U-Haul storage facility where our camper was stored. They drive in and the camper is missing. Then they drive around again just to make sure they were in the right spot. It was gone so they went to the office to ask if they moved it for any reason and they said no. The U-Haul office has signs that say 24-hour video surveillance, and when you walk in, you see the monitors with all the footage. It's all part of a big farce that lures you into believing your stuff is safe.

The first day (Wednesday) the manager says that no one at that location can review the video surveillance, that the Regional manager Nick Marra has to review it. Naturally Nick Marra is nowhere to be found (and, wow, shocker, he still hasn't called us), so the manager says we'll have to wait until the next day to talk to him. When the Henderson Police finally arrive, they say they have been at this U-Haul facility a lot, and that the managers consistently refuse to turn over the surveillance footage. Great.

Thursday - a different manager says he has figured out a way to review the tapes, but that it will take a long time. Rick mentions that one of the ladies at the facility took pictures of the camper on Monday, so he should only have to review two days worth. While we were waiting for the Popovich pet show, Rick calls back and the manager says it will take a while to review two weeks worth of tape. Rick mentions again that it should only be two days worth.

Friday - I call the insurance company for U-Haul who tells me that Rick signed a waiver so the U-Haul insurance isn't responsible. She says the only way U-Haul would be responsible is if one of their employees did it, and I said I believe they did, and she said lots of people have key cards to get in there so I can't prove it was a U-Haul employee, then I say, "You can't prove it wasn't". Rick stops by U-Haul at lunch time and shocker - the manager is outside talking to the police about yet another theft.

Monday - Rick calls and the manager says the footage has been turned over to Nick Marra. Another big shocker - he still hasn't reviewed the footage OR turned it over to the police.

A week later I turned the whole story over to the Better Business Bureau, the State of Nevada Department of Insurance, and the local news channel. That was a couple days ago. I haven't heard anything from any of them. I guess our next step is a lawyer.

The whole thing is ripe with collusion. U-Haul is only responsible if one of their employees did it, but if they never turn over the footage to the police, they are never responsible.

Stay tuned. This is far from over.
