About 200 to 400 million years ago the light colored striations were shale and limestone at the bottom of an ocean. Then about 150 million years ago the ocean dried up and was covered with red sand. Then about 95 million years ago the earth's plates started shifting, so the shale and limestone pushed up through the red sand layer. Fascinating!!
